Carroll Soil and Water Conservation District’s
2010 No-till Drill Program
The Carroll Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is pleased to offer a no-till drill rental program for the land users of Carroll County and surrounding counties. This program provides land users with the ability to rent equipment at a reasonable rate without the costly purchase.
No-till causes little disturbance to the remaining crop residue, therefore, we see little run-off and /or erosion from no-till crop fields. This is by far the greatest reason to use no-till. A few other reasons are less time in the field, improved soil quality and as good or better crop yields. Another huge advantage for no-till is in fuel savings. Did you realize it takes approximately 500 gallons of diesel fuel to plant 100 acres of corn using conventional tillage methods? At $2.65 per gallon price, that equals $1,325.00 for the 100 acres. To plant that same 100 acres using no-till methods, you would need just 277 gallons of fuel which would cost you $734.05 at the $2.65 per gallon price. This would give you a savings of $590.95 for every 100 acres of corn planted. Remember in addition to every dollar saved in fuel, there is probably another $5 to $10 per acre in additional savings in labor, machinery investment and related costs.
No-till improves soil quality or soil function, carbon, organic matter, aggregates in the soil, protects the soil from erosion, evaporation of water, and structural breakdown of the soils. A reduction in tillage passes can also help prevent the compaction of soil.
Three drills, including a 10’ John Deere, a 10’ Hay buster, and a 7’ Haybuster, are available for a rental rate of $13.00 per acre. A minimum charge of $50.00 will be charged for the use of any drill. The 7’ drill will work well to reseed pastures and for those who have smaller tractors.
To schedule equipment please contact Kevin Davis at 330-738-2475. Davis has been contracted with the District to provide leadership with the no-till drill program. However, all invoicing will come from the Carroll SWCD office.
